LSP team development between TikTok and fax machine

Why we need new methods to truly bring generations into conversation in the workplace.

Four generations. One team. One goal. And yet everyone is talking past each other.

Baby boomers, who rely on years of experience and loyal structures.
Millennials, who take project work, agility, and work-life balance for granted.
Gen Z, who demand purpose and a clear stance.
And somewhere in between: managers, HR, and talent developers, who are supposed to somehow mediate all of this.

Welcome to the world of work.

Why the attempt to "bring everyone along" often fails

What often seems harmless in theory and strategy papers, such as "We promote intergenerational work and learning," quickly becomes a challenge in practice. Projects frequently fail not because of the idea itself, but because of misunderstandings in collaboration: unspoken expectations, hidden prejudices, and communication styles that confuse more than they clarify.

The cause? Often simply: a lack of mutual understanding.

In a world where we primarily communicate in 2D, there is often a lack of space to create genuine connection – beyond roles, titles, and buzzwords.

LEGO® Serious Play® as a method against speechlessness

LEGO Serious Play (LSP) may sound playful to some – but it is a highly structured moderation approach that addresses cognitive, emotional and social levels simultaneously.

Participants build models with LEGO bricks that represent their perspectives, experiences, or desires regarding a specific issue. These models are then explained, reflected upon, and discussed. This process generates insights that often remain hidden in pure conversation.

This is particularly liberating in an intergenerational context.
Everyone builds. Everyone speaks. Everyone listens. It's not age, but perspective that counts.

But LSP is not a panacea – and that's exactly what's important to know

  • Time-consuming: The method requires space – for reflection, exchange, and trust. Those planning only a short team-building event are better off choosing other formats.

  • Emotionally unusual: For many, working with their hands is initially unfamiliar, even unpleasant. It requires good facilitation and a clear goal.

  • Trust-based: LSP only works if there is psychological safety.

But if this succeeds, the method can build bridges where language alone fails.

What HR and Talent Development can learn from this

  1. Understanding instead of guessing: LSP helps to make implicit attitudes visible – for example, regarding leadership concepts, career views, or feedback culture.

  2. Designing sustainable team processes: Building together creates relationships – not only in workshops, but as a basis for joint development.

  3. Think of trust as a strategic resource: Those who want to bring generations together need more than just value posters. Trust arises from shared experiences that allow for a change of perspective.

Conclusion: We need new forms of dialogue for new realities

In a hybrid, fast-paced work environment, it's tempting to standardize everything. But trust, understanding, and sustainable collaboration don't happen at the push of a button. They require time, commitment, and sometimes an unconventional approach.

LEGO Serious Play is not a magic bullet. But it opens a door to genuine, intergenerational collaboration.
